PRESENTATION

• IDM - Industrial Design Mentorship is an educational pilot program whose objective is to generate a bridge between academic training in industrial design and real work experience in the area.

PROPOSAL

• Through a series of meetings between the student and the mentor, the aim is to develop industrial design projects, within the context of real job, but with a didactic component. This implies, for example, that the project is carried out with independent deadlines, which do not necessarily match those of a real job.

WHO IS IT INTENDED FOR

• To advanced students of industrial design, in their third or fourth year.

It is also aimed at graduates seeking to deepen their performance in this specific area of industrial design.

SUMMARY CONTENT

Unit 1 — «Background».

• The conceptual part of mentoring is based on the following scientific articles:

  • «Triadic design model. New conceptual tool for 21st century design education».
Published in: World Design Congress, ICSID, now WDO, Singapore 2009. Author: Andrés Parallada, 2009.

  • «Román Fresnedo Siri, furniture design and changing meanings. A didactic proposal based on the RF1 armchair».
Published in: Julio Vilamajó Award, FADU, UdelaR, Uruguay. Authors: Agustín Pagano; Andrés Parallada and Juan Manuel Salgueiro, 2016..

Unit 2 — «Practice».

• The practical part is organized according to a set of more or less classic tasks within the traditional methodology of industrial design.

The difference, in relation to traditional academic training, lies in the fact that the criteria used to guide these activities, as mentioned above, are closer to real professional activity than to academic criteria.

Throughout the mentorship, the following tasks are performed:

• Preliminary Project: (i) Market information, research, product mapping of a given sector; (ii) Analytical creation, visual styling panel, conceptual sketches, reference dimensions, map of the 4 cardinal points, technical sketches and exploratory mock-ups.

• Optmized Project: (i) 2D drawings, orthogonal projections, cuts, systematic development of alternatives; (ii) 3D modeling, partly verifying what was planted in the drawings, partly created from the 3D modeling; (iii) Renderings, materials and textures; (iv) There may be an iteration to the previous Preliminary Project stage.

Final Project: (i) Technical documentation for protypes, final dimensions, final manufacturing considerations; (ii) Final 3D modeling, complementing the documentation of 2D drawings; (iii) Renderings for product presentation; (iv) Document assembly with the general presentation of the product.

Prototype and Evaluation: (i) Prototype construction; (ii) Prototype evaluation; (iii) Prototype adjustments; (iv) Construction of a new prototype, new evaluation.

• During the weekly meeting between mentor and student, the guidelines for the practical work to be done outside class hours are established. An estimated dedication of 8 hours per week is expected.

• At the same time, the progress of the assigned tasks is evaluated during the weekly meeting.
